Analysis and interpretation of the short story “The safe solution” by Kevin Cadwallender

In an everyday life there is always something that will go on repeatedly, without you even noticing it or have the will to do something about it. The short story “The safe solution” is a very good example of how small things can ruin an entire life.

The person in the story lives a very normal life. He wakes up, does his morning ritual, and leaves for work. At work the hours go by fast and exhausted he arrives at home, where his wife and dog are awaiting him. After supper he heads to the usual pub, where he gets a brew, and possibly a little buzz. He comes home drunk and cries out for sex, where he stays on top of her until he falls asleep.

The man seems as though he is tired of his work. Already when he arrives and smells the first cigarette, and pours the first cup, of what may seem as tea, he wants to go home again. He is wondering about things that he should be wondering about himself. E.g. why the kids today aren’t smiling, when he realizes that neither is he. Maybe it is a person like him, who does that to the younger generation. He makes them not want to work, because they can see that he is not happy. He is mean to his wife, because he only uses her for sex, when he wants to, and is the type who is unfaithful to his wife. He drools over the barmaid, who pulls his pints. He makes everything go away when he arrives at the pub. It is like he walks into another atmosphere, where only the thoughts in his mind are going on.
