Despite the fact that ‘’Ashes’’ by Susan Beth Pfeffer and ‘’Beyond Pastel’’ by Katherine Lawrence are two different forms of writing, they share resembling themes, similar and contrasting characters, along with relatable conflicts. Both selections explore the topics of divorce and the possible consequences from this.

Comparing the short story ‘’Ashes’’ and the poem ‘’Beyond Pastel’’ it is noticeable that the central ideas of both pieces of writing are quite identical. ‘’Divorce is tough on everyone in the family, and affects not only the parents’’ is a great theme for both selections, as they both deal with the topic of divorce. ‘’They are getting divorced but tell us nothing will change, though I don’t know how moving from a bungalow to a row house and seeing Dad once a month does not add up to change’’. We can infer from this statement in ‘’Beyond Pastel’’, her living conditions have changed after the divorce. ‘’I’d been seeing him Tuesdays for almost two years at that point.’’ Ashleigh in ‘’Ashes’’ went from living under one roof to taking turns with her mom and dad.

Along with theme, the characters in the two selections share similarities and differences. The main characters in both pieces are experiencing the results of a divorce. They are sad and frustrated due to the separation. However, they are tackling this differently.
