The film is about the McCourt family and the people they know, it takes place in the 1930’ies told from the view of the oldest son in the family, Frank (also known as Frankie). In the family we find; a mother called Angela, a father called Malachy senior, Frank, Malachy junior, Eugene and Oliver.
The family started their lives in Ireland but moved to New York in the United States of America early because they couldn’t find any jobs in Ireland and they thought it’d be easier to find some in New York. But unfortunately they weren’t right and they even loose a child – Margret. Therefore they move back to Ireland hoping they could maybe get some jobs there.
When they arrive to Ireland, they figure that things are even worse there. It’s impossible to get a job and when they go to the IRA which the dad fought for during the war against Great Brittan they won’t give him any money because they can’t find his files. They’re kind enough to give him money to a bus-ticket back into the city since they – Malachy Senior and Frankie – walked a long way to their office, but when Malachy Senior asks for money to a pint the man from the IRA gets mad, throw them out and tells them to never even contact them ever again.
