Mr. John Keating is the new teacher and former student at The Welton Academy prep boarding school. He is firstly introduced by Nolan, the headmaster, in the beginning of the movie. Mr. Keating teaches very differently than his collaborates. He likes to inspire and encourage the individual student, and focuses on teaching the students to think individually, be free-thinkers, to not let others change who you are or be in charge of your life and to see all things from different angels. The first time we see an example on that, is in the senior students first English period with Mr. Keating. He leads them to the hallway, shows them old pictures of former students and teaches them the saying “carpe diem” or “seize the day”. He also encourages them to rip out the introduction in the poetry book, to teach them to think for themselves, and to stand up on the table, to see things from a new angle.
Mr. Keating also tells the boys to “suck the marrow out of life”, which I would interpret as that Keating wants the boys to live their lives to the fullest. To find something that, as an individual, makes their lives extraordinary and valuable. To take advantage of all that live has to offer, to enjoy every single bit of it and to make it all count.
