Alternative Music

What was first called alternative rock appeared by the late 60's, all the attention was turned to psychedelic rock in the West Coast and british invasion in, well, Britain, and out of nothing, back in the East Coast, some garage/art rock bands, influenced by bands like The Who and The Kinks, started gaining space in the market, the biggest examples are The Velvet Underground, marked by lyrics talking about lethal drugs, whores and homosexuals, and The Stooges, marked by a heavier, more distorted sound, things that not even the hippies were prepared to listen to. The alternative seal kept with glam bands like NY Dolls, Roxy Music, Blondie and even David Bowie. After the explosion of punk, those bands became known as protopunk bands, and punk became the new alternative music, then post-punk, and finally new wave, until the early 80's, when alternative music became the kind of rock music that is more leaned to pop, marked by bands like R.E.M. and The Smiths, and that definition went on until the late 2000's.
