The short story takes place in an English town in the 1950’s, and its Christmas time. It is a 3.person narrator, the point of view main character Malika.
The story starts off in a kindergarten or a primary school (L. 7-9). The first person we get introduced to is Malika. You would say that she is about 5-8 years old. Malika is a sweet Pakistani girl, and the story indicates that she is very lonely. People don’t want to sit next to her, because she smells weird. The smell maybe comes from where she lives. Her parents own a little shop and at the back of the shop is where Malika spends most of her time watching television, while her parents are working. The room is a little filthy, filled up with piles of cardboard boxes, tinned fruit and so on, so this also indicates that the family does not have much money.
It is Christmas time at school and Malika the main character is sitting nicely in school drawing the Prophet from Nazareth and his mother. Because Malika is a Muslim, she draws Mary’s skin dark as herself, despite the other pupils that draw her skin white. I don’t think Malika is even thinking about it, it just come natural to her. Malika is told by her teacher that her Christmas card isn’t going on the wall as all the other Christmas cards. The teacher tries to trick her by saying to her that she thinks her Christmas card is far too pretty to hang there. Instead she should take it with her home and show it to her parents. We can tell that Malika is hurt by the words of her teacher (l. 19).
