For our subject Natural disasters and catastrophes, I would like to talk a little about earthquakes, how they work, what causes them and who have had the hardest time dealing with earthquakes.

First of all, we all know earthquakes, these big cracks that just appear in the middle of the ground. But what does make the surface crack? So, all the countries in the world are laying on these very big plates called continental plates or also called tectonic plates. And in order for an earthquake to happen these plates either have to rub against each other or slip past each other. Sometimes when they do one of the mentioned actions it causes the ground to make severe shakes and thereby resulting in an earthquake. The reason these plates slip past or rub against each other has not really been figured out yet, but many geologists mean that it is because the core of the world sometimes releases, some serious heat waves, and there is pressure on these heat waves that they cause the tectonic plates to move.

When measuring the strength of earthquakes we use the Richter-scale. The Richter-scale goes from 0 to 10, no earthquakes have hit 10 yet, but geologists are expecting some not far out in the future.
