Hello everyone, my name is [NAVN A], and I am here today at Leiths School to give a speech about food waste. The issue of food waste arises when many people choose to throw away food that is still edible, while others go hungry. 15 million tons of food are wasted in the UK every year (Newsroom, 2015), and the average citizen in the UK wastes about 88 kg of food per year, which is both an environmental problem and a waste of resources. My previous projects on food waste have been successful, and this gives me the opportunity today to stand in front of you all. In my speech, I will discuss the causes of food waste, its effects locally and globally, ways to reduce it, and how addressing food waste can also present business opportunities.
There are many reasons for food waste. Some of the biggest causes include poor shopping and meal planning, as well as promotional offers like “buy one, get one free” which encourage people to purchase more than they need. (Comission, 2012) Another significant factor is confusion among consumers regarding the difference between "best before" and "use by" dates, often resulting in the disposal of food that is still safe to eat. (Comission, Causes of food waste) However, consumers are not the only ones responsible for food waste. It occurs at every stage of the supply chain, from farms and food manufacturing to shops and restaurants. This happens when factors like overproduction, strict quality standards and transport or storage problem leads to food waste.
