Every year, 2,3 million children die because of hunger, even though there is enough food in the world to feed every child. Tons of food does not even reach the supermarket shelves at all, because it is past the best-by date. How did our eating habits come to this, and can we do anything to change the situation we have put ourselves in? Based on the video and the article, I will throughout this text discuss the causes and results of our food habits, and how this can affect us in the future.

According to the video from VOA Voice of America, the world annually produces around 4 billion tons of food, yet between a third and half of it goes to waste. One of the reason why this is, is because of the supermarkets. When they get the food delivered they have high standards as to how the food should look, and therefore some of the food does not reach the shelves. The rest of the food gets thrown out, even though it is perfectly fresh and edible. It is all about making money, and the consumers will not buy stuff that does not look good, because they associate it with being too old. Richard Dodd of the British Retail Consortium explains that it is not the supermarkets’ fault that all this food goes to waste. He talks about the EU marketing rules that says better farming practices ensures all the food produced reaches the customers, but it claims millions of tons of food is thrown away.
