In the short story “Fireweed” written by Skye Bannon from 2009, we get introduces to Baluta on an almost normal day in his life as a carpenter, after his immigration from a war zone in Africa to America.
The short story is written in past tense and proceeds chronologically. The short story is two and a half page long, and that’s typical for a short story. The short story only has a few characters, Tiffani and Baluta, extend beyond a short mound of time, contains a conflict, a rising action, which all are typical in the essay genre. The story is detailed considered the fact that it only stretches over a day. The short story doesn’t contain many descriptions of the environment. It contains a lot of flashbacks from Baluta’s life in Liberia. That's all very typical features for a short story. The flashbacks occur because of some incidents in his new life, that remind him of something from his past life in Liberia. It begins when he’s taking a cold bath in the morning. “Cold like Kpatawee Falls back home, Baluta thought.”, which refers to a Fall in Liberia because he says “Like … Back home”. At that moment, he knew that the day was going to be a remembering day. The flashbacks start with being innocent and calm childhood memories, but after a little bit, the flashback seems to get less harmless for him.
