The short story”Happy Birthday” is written by Kurt Vonnegut. It’s about a young boy and an old man. The old man is supposed to be a father figure for the boy, because a refugee woman left him to the old man when he was a baby, and never returned. After that, they have lived together for seven years with no documents with Nationality, Name and Birthday on the boy, because the old man didn’t know who he is or where he comes from. The story takes place in 1951 either during the Second World War or after. There are some different sentences in the story that points to both. They have lived together in a ruin for those seven years, which would be a little strange if it was a long time ago after the War. Since the year is 1951, it is clear that they have lived in the ruin during the War. Firstly on Page 1 line 23 it says:“…renounced or apologized for nothing, voted or marched for nothing, since the war” The words “since the war”, proves that it takes place after the war. Secondly it shows in the end of the story that the war is over on Page 3 line 109-111;
