Going through education is not easy – but it is important. With an education you get a future full of opportunities. Education consist of many years of hard work, responsibility, and discipline, which is a subject President Barack Obama focuses on in his speech at Wakefield High School in Arlington, Virginia, September 8, 2009. He wants the students to work hard in order to reach their dream and he wishes to motivate them. Motivate them to get the future they need, desire, and, most importantly, deserve.
Obama’s main claim, which he is making a constantly repeat of, is, that you have your own responsibility for your education. It is not going to be easy, but there is no bright future without an education. He needs everyone to work hard in order for the nation to succeed. “And that’s what I want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your education. I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself” (l.34 p.2). Obama says and speaks directly to the students. Since the audience consists of a younger age group, who are more likely to lose interest, Obama needs to bring attention to the fact, that his words are important for their future. He does that by using a simple and understandable language. Also by opening the speech with: “Hello everyone – how’s everybody doing today?” (l.1 p.1). He sets this scene by making himself seem like an equal to the audience even though he, in fact, is the most powerful man in the world.
