Analytical essay:
The speech is primarily encouraging American students to stay in school, work hard, and take responsibility for their own education. The former President, Barack Obama, uses the three methods of persuasion. Firstly, he uses ethos, which is the appeal of the speaker’s character or the character of the other. He uses it when talking about JK Rowling and Michael Jordan; “JK Rowling’s first Harry Potter book was rejected twelve times before it was finally published. Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team […]”. Obama makes these two examples, to really clarify how the students cannot let their failures define them as persons, and a result, Obama intensifies the message. Obama also uses a lot of ethos when talking about himself and his early memories; “I know that feeling.”. Obama gives some stories from his own life, so he uses ethos appeal because he has gone through the same as the students.
