A president is expected to be good at giving speeches, and good at inspiring the citizens in his country. He is chosen by his nation, based on not only his opinions, but also by his ability to convince the people that he is the best candidate, with the help of speeches. A president should be able to relate to his citizens and be seen as believable and trustworthy. A president well known for his ability to give at good speech, was president Barack Obama, and in this speech, he doesn’t disappoint. The speech, which was held at a back to school event in Arlington, Virginia, on September 8, 2009, is clearly a successful speech, seeing as he made himself equal to the students, while also assessing his role as an authority.
President Barack Obama addresses the audience in an informal way, thus giving the impression that he feels the students are equal to him, for example: “I’m glad you all could join us today” ( p.1, l.3), “I know that for many of you, today is the first day of school” (p.1, l. 4), which gives the impression that he sees the students as equals, while also assessing his role as an authority. Being a black man, he cares about equal rights for all, and he doesn’t change that opinion based on anything, weather it is age, gender or race, everyone is equal to him. Teenagers, especially the older ones, like to be treated as responsible adults, and he manages to do that in his speech.
