The story “Of Mice and Men” is a novel written by John Steinbeck. The story was first published in 1937 and it became a world famous story. Today you can find the story as a book, a film or on the internet. John Steinbeck was born in Salinas, California, U.S. in 1902. He was an American author, who had written 27 books: 16 of them were novels, 6 of them were non-fiction stories and five of them were collections of short stories. He got the Nobel Prize in literature in 1962 and he has been called “a giant of American letters”. He was mostly known for the novels, “East of Eden” (1952), “Of Mice and Men” (1937) and the Pulitzer Prize-winning “The Grapes of Wrath” (1939). Many of John Steinbeck´s works are considered classics of Western literature.
The story “Of Mice and Men” is about two men, George and Lennie, who are the main characters. These two men are field workers in California. They travel from one farm to another to get a job, make money and try to survive. George and Lennie have a dream that one day they will have enough money to own a little farm where they can live by themselves and have a little house for animals. Then they´ll not need to worry or depend on others anymore and can eventually control their own lives and get what they want. They have had this dream as a future plan in their minds for a very long time and that is what keeps them motivated in trying to survive.
