'Of Mice and Men' og den amerikanske drøm

John Steinbeck was born in 1902 in Salinas, California, a region that became the setting for much of his fiction, including of Mice and Men. The novel “Of Mice and Men” deals with the “American dream”. The two men George and Lennie are the main characters. These two characters always stick together thought thick and thin. In their small brotherhood George is the leader, and Lennie just follow George’s footsteps. George is the little, thin, smart and dark faced protector of Lennie, who is the big, hug, dumb, mentally retarded and vulnerable chid that repeats what other people say. In addition, Lennie is obsessed by tending soft pets, witch always results in murder of the pets because of Lennie’s enormous powers.

The first part is about Lennie and George’s dreams. To George, this dream of having their own place means independence, security, being their own boss, and, most importantly, being "somebody." To Lennie, the dream is like the soft animals he pets: It means security, the responsibility of tending to the rabbits, and a sanctuary where he won't have to be afraid.

The second part is about -According to Steinbeck, is the American dream possible?

First George and Lennie work on a farm. They are newcomers, after they, because of Lennie’s stupidity escaped from another ranch. They have a dream. The two brothers’ hard work is motivated by their “American dream”. They dream about a little farm/ranch where they can live by themselves. They don’t want to depend on other people. They want to control their own lives, do what they want and produce what they need. This dream is their plan for the future, and it the only thing that keeps them fighting on. “I remember about the rabbits, George. The hell with the rabbits. That’s all you can ever remember is them rabbits”. Quotes (1.18-19). In the quote, you can hear not mice, not chickens, not cats, but rabbits. All of Lennie’s future is wrapped up in rabbits. “O.K. Someday-we´re gonna get the jack together and we´re gonna have a little house and a couple of acres an´ a cow and some pigs and…An live off the fatta the lan´, Lennie shouted.
