The Amish are protestants and they are an anti-modernist religious group. They were founded in 1690 by Jacob Amman. He was a Mennonite preacher. The Amish people hold church every second Sunday. In the church, there are about twenty-five to thirty families, and there is one bishop, two preachers, and one deacon. In the church the Amish people have a ceremony that takes three hours. After the ceremony, they eat meals and after there is one hour of socializing.
Both Mennonites and Amish believe in one God eternally existing as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. They believe that Jesus Christ, God's only Son, died on the cross for the sins of the world. The Amish people believe that their life is how a person should lead life on earth. They believe that the Amish religion should be practiced into daily living instead of focused on symbols or complicated religious rituals. Their belief is that God has a personal and abiding interest in their lives.
Because of their religious beliefs, Amish try to separate themselves from "outsiders" to avoid temptations and sin. Instead they choose to rely on themselves and the other members of their local Amish community.
Many Amish also practice a works-based relationship with God. They view their good works as earning favor with God. If their good works outweigh the bad works, they feel God will allow them into heaven. The Amish are basically good, hard-working people, who have to make sure they stay on the right path, so they get final rewards in heaven when life is over. They say "Amish is a lifestyle,” not a religion. They choose to keep the simple life so they can focus more time on family and home, instead of things that require advanced modern technology.
