To be Amish is to believe in the Bible in a very literal way. There are, however, historical reasons for this. Fifteen hundred and seventeen was the year of the reformation in Europe. There were many religious movements and one of them was called the Anabaptists. They were against the baptising in a young age and suggested it should be postponed until adult life. This movement started in Switzerland but was ostracized later on. They had to move and spread all over Europe but everywhere they were hated. However, in 1727 the world heard about “The New Country” and the English colony Pennsylvania and in the following 43 years Anabaptist from whole Europe moved to America and settled in Pennsylvania, New York, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri and Ohio. Their new leader was called Jacob Ammann and soon thereafter, they called themselves “The Amish”.
White farms with laundry hanging in the garden. Carriages driven by men with beard and straw hats. Boys with trousers, braces and white shirts hand in hand with girls in dresses, aprons and knots at the back. Everything surrounded by a complete silence with no cars or other disturbing machines. This could take place in year 1800 but is actually how the Amish live today. They live a life with no electricity or modern inventions, in accordance with God and the Nature. How can they live that way in our modern society? What rights do they have? These are the questions I want to answer.
