Fomusoh Ivo Feh, Afuh Nivelle Nfor and Azah Levis Gob. These are the names of 3 young men currently imprisoned in your country. They were all arrested and sentenced to 10 years because of a joke over sms.
Before this, Fomusoh had a bright future ahead of him. He was just about to start university in Cameroon, where he lives. But then, one day, he received a text message from one of his friends, saying: “Boko Haram recruits young people from 14 years old and above. Conditions for recruitment: 4 subjects at GCE, including religion”. This message was obviously a joke, poking fun at the fact that it is very difficult to find a good job without being very highly qualified, and he joked about Boko Haram won’t take you unless you have high education.
Ivo decided to forward this message to one of his friends, who sent it to another friend. But, a teacher noticed this text, and confiscated the phone. She went to the police with it, and the three young men were arrested.
Then, on November 2 a military court sentenced these three young men to 10 years in prison for crimes related to terrorism.
This is downright unbelievable. Free speech is one of the most basic human rights in existence, and the fact that you silence, and arrest them for poking fun at your flawed system is pathetic.
