The perks of being a wallflower is about a young boy named Charlie. Charlie is the narrator over his own life, and with a series of letters, he writes his experiences to an unknown stranger. Being very shy and introverted, Charlie often finds himself in awkward situations between his peers and friends.
The opening of the text begins with a sudden entry, and you get straight inside of Charlie’s head. There is no introduction and the information about Charlies is very little. “I will call people by different names or generic names because I don’t want you to find me.” Charlie writes to an unknown person and he wants to be anonymous. He knows that he is not the popular guy, and he is ready to admit many things that he has experienced as a “wallflower.”
Charlie is trying to find himself in his life and he acknowledges that himself. “And I want you to know that I am both happy and sad and I’m still trying to figure out how that could be.” What Charlies is writing in the opening of the text gives a perspective for the reader, that Charlie is somewhat confused, and the latter experiences that he describes, proves this. Charlie is trying to come to terms with the events in his life, both happy and sad and he is trying to identify himself and get his wallflower experiences off his chest.
