1: The short story, ”The Fabulous Button Sisters” written by Sarah Salway is about a girl called Karen who gets a new friend. Her name is Michelle. Karen and Michelle prepare for a party where they should dress up as chocolate buttons. Michelle plans to be “The Fabulous Button Sisters”. Michelle will be the white one and Karen the ordinary one - the brown one. Thereafter, we get an insight of their friendship. The night where Karen and Michelle go the party, they make an appointment to see each other on the corner. When Karen comes, she sees that Michelle wears something else than they have agreed. Michelle tells Karen that she moves to her mother in Hollywood. Michelle sends postcards to Karen where she tells about how it goes in Hollywood but Karen finds out that the postcards are not sent from Hollywood but from Birmingham, England.
2: In the short story “The Fabulous Button Sisters” the main-character is Karen as we see the whole story of her point of view. Karen lives with her parents. Her parents are not understandable at some points; “I didn’t tell her about Michelle’s theme because I guessed what she’d say. (p.9 l.61), “She wasn’t like Michelle’s mom. She wouldn’t understand” (p.9 l.64). Karen is a girl who has low self-worth. She is easy to persuade and she cannot put her foot down; “But what If I want to be white? I didn’t particularly. (…)” (p.8 ll.30-31). She does what Michelle says. She cannot say her opinions as she lets Michelle take the control of her, probably because she looks up to Michelle; “I was in love. It wasn’t just her lip gloss (…)” (p.8 ll.13-16). Karen forgets her best friend Connie because of Michelle and she prefers Michelle rather than Connie. She finds Michelle more interesting than Connie. She is also naive as she believes in what Michelle says; “Me too, because Michelle said I had to go with her. After all we were a double act, weren’t we? The Fabulous something sisters.” (p. 9 ll.48-50). Karen chooses to let go and be herself when Michelle moves to Hollywood. In this way she can come up with her own ideas. Moreover, she learns to take ownership of something.
