The English novel “Sandy and her Beautiful Sisters” is written by Antonia Fraser, and published in 2001. As the headline implies, the novel is also a modern fairy tale, which has a lot of features from the old fashioned fairy tale “Cinderella”. I will elaborate on this later in my essay.

The novel is written in third person, and it’s told very chronological with no flash backs or flash forwards. It starts with the very popular sentence within fairy tales: “Once upon a time …”. This shows us, that the novel is a modern fairy tale. The story takes place in our time in a flat in Fulham, London, where our main character, Sandy, lives with her two older sisters, Helena and Harriet. Both sisters are very good looking:

“.. they were long-legged goddesses”

They share their clothes and make-up, live just beside each other in the apartment’s two biggest rooms, and they hardly ever close the door between them. It could seem that they only care about how they look, and which of them who has the cutest boyfriend. Sandy is the total opposite. She lives in the back of the apartment in a small room. She is not as pretty as her sisters; she has big curly hair and a very buxom, curvy body. She’s the one who does all the housework in the flat; she cooks dinner to her sisters and the men they drag home with them, washes their clothes and takes care of the garden. But it doesn’t seem like Sandy minds doing this work. She obviously loves cooking and she also works for an agency, which cooks for other people. The agency is run by a lady called Mrs. Fairey. She is an old, old woman, but one of Sandy’s best “friends”. She is a very good advice-giver, and one of her special “powers” is, that she is able to look right through people, and spot lies and other things which are not said out loud:
