The story “The Fabulous Button Sisters” is a short story written by the British author Sarah Salway in 2006. It is about a girl named Karen - a quiet, smart girl who lives with her parents in the UK. Karen meets a new girl at school; Michelle. Karen is fascinated by Michelle’s type of person because of the differences and excitement. Karen and her family are completely different than Michelle’s. Michelle lives with her aunt, who treats her more like a best friend than a daughter or niece. She has free rein. Her mother is in Hollywood trying to make a career and her father abandoned them years ago, which tells what kind of a background she comes from.

Michelle shares dreams with her mother - she wants to be famous one day too. Michelle includes Karen in her plan and promise her that they will go to Hollywood together, as “The Fabulous Button Sisters”. Karen likes the idea, but she gets confused when Michelle chooses to repeatedly ditch what they had agreed on as friends.

Characterization

Karen is an ordinary girl who goes with the flow. She is insecure and a bit clumsy as well; “when I found myself knocked into the gutter for the umpteenth time”. (p. 1, l. 27.) She has a hard time standing up for herself and making her own decisions, which shows in Karen’s actions - she is willing to do whatever Michelle tells her to. She is a really smart girl, although it might not seem so - she knows what Michelle is doing, but because of the insecurities she seems to have, she accepts it. (p.10, ll.106-110).
