Two weeks ago, I met the young, smiling and award-winning Joel Davis for a talk about his past and about his new projects.
Joel Davis is a young man from Islington, London in Great Britain.
At first when I met Joel, I got the impression that he was just a normal person and nothing pointed towards that he has had a very hard past.
Joel was born in 1995 in a very poor family, where his mother was sick and unable to work. He had trouble reading at a young age, and he never received any help from neither his home or his teachers and he therefore fell behind at school. Because he felt betrayed by the system and never got the chance to get a good education, he decided that he wanted to help a lot of children who is in the same situation as he was when he was a kid. So he decided to start a tutoring service, where the purpose is to help poor kids, and kids having trouble in school, as well as at home. University students volunteer as teachers and the progress is already clear. The majority of the kids in the program has already gained higher grades. Today more than 170 children are getting help from the service, and that number can be multiplied by a lot, because the idea has been copied by a lot of others.
