19-year-old starts tutoring service an article by Louie Tien
Joel Davis from Islington, London, was this year nominated, and won the Young People of the Year Award. Joel Davis’ background will shock you if you talk to him today. Today, he is a very down-to-earth person who cares a lot about children, other people, and education. He started a tutoring service on his own, to help the poor and more “challenged” children with their homework. Him and his friends from his university, teach these kids everything from Mathematics, English, Physics, you name it. There are more than 170 children who have gotten help from their service, and they have even set up their own website to spread the idea and their work with others.
Davis grew up in Islington and still lives there, but at his university with student accommodation. He says that he had a hard time in school because he came from a poor family, his mother was sick, and could therefore not work, and his father left when he was little.
“I’ve never really had a real conversation with my father. He left when I was 3 years old, so I’ve never really had a fatherly figure in my life.” Davis told me.
