Zero gets called zero through the whole book. He has been called zero for most of his life. But his real name I Hector Zeroni. His mother abandoned him when he was still very small, and he has been homeless for most of his life. Zero didn’t get much education so he can´t read or write. Zero knows that he is smart and he can stand up for himself when it is needed, despite all the adversity he has faced. He is in the beginning presented as a strange character because he always walks around with a “scowl” on his face and rarely speaks. Eventually, when zero becomes friends with Stanley (the main character) the reader learns that zero is silent because he does not like answering questions and most likely, because he is aware of people like Mr Pendanski, who always mocks him. Zero has suffered so much in his life, that he half way through the book can’t stand being at camp green lake any more, and he runs away. He is very generous, and he shares his last jar od “sploosh” with Stanley after he runs away to. As Stanley gains self-confidence, Zero begins to talk more and scowl less. Zero is also very honest and although he steals because he lives on the street, he tries to steal less valuable things so that people will not mind as much. It is really Zero who has stolen the shoes that Stanley was accused of stealing and Zero feels bad for Stanley and apologizes for stealing them.
