The Amish life, consist of a lot of rules, also known as “Ordnung”. The rules help them to define what it means to be Amish. The rules or Ordnung is different from community to community. The Amish live in a peaceful Cristian community, where they are self-sufficient. The Amish doesn't like modern technology and they live in houses without electricity. The electricity is however sometimes used in certain situations, example for heating up the houses and for the fences surrounding the animals.
The first Amish people arrived in America, Pennsylvania in the 1730 and the Amish people have since then settled in 24 states. 80 % of the amish live in Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana. The Amish population is more than 150.000 people and the number is still growing, because in average a married couple gets 7 children each! The family life is very important for the Amish culture. The Ordnung says that Amish have to marry Amish and they are not allowed to be divorced. The men usually work on the farm, while the women do the washing, cleaning and cooking.
The Amish speak German at home and the children learn English though their schools. According to the Amish people, education is only necessary to become a good farmer or housewife. All other education is considered obsolete. Therefore, Amish children only go to school until the 8th grade.
