The movie “Se7en” is a movie about a serial killer who uses the 7 deadly sins to justify his killings. Every murder he commits relates to one of the 7 deadly sins, gluttony, greed, sloth, lust, pride, envy and wrath. Throughout the movie, we follow the two detectives Mills and Somerset who try to find out who the killer is, what his motive and message is and if there is a relation between the different murders.

The movie takes place in a typical city in the US in which the lights are always on, people are everywhere and there is constant sense of busyness. But behind the scenes everything is not as it seems. None of the murders are committed in random places. Rather, the sceneries set for these murders represent the dark side of the city. The dark side of the city in which we experience darkness, poverty, abandonment, negligence and horror.

People did not use to care about what happened in the dark side of the city as they thought it was easier to ignore the problems than to deal with them. This is exactly what Somerset refers to when he says, “Apathy is a virtue in this city”. During his time as a police officer, Somerset has seen both sides of the city but he has never experienced a case like this, which has affected all people despite social status.
