Just over 4 years ago, the great man of Nelson Mandela got released from prison. He sentenced more than 27 years. All his life he has been fighting against the apartheid in South Africa. He’s given all his life to that cause.

Yesterday, May 10th 1994, South Africa got a new president. First black president in all of South African history. A man whom now proudly could say “I made it”. The remarkable man, Nelson Madiba Mandela.

Nelson Mandela taking the oath at his inauguration on May 10th 1994.

“Today we are entering a new era for our country” Mandela said to tens of thousands of cheering supporters from the balcony of the City Hall. The selfsame balcony he was addressing the country 4 years ago.

“The people of South Africa have spoken in these elections.” Mandela said.

“They want change – and change is what they will get.”

Nelson was the only nominee to succeed the former president, F. W. de Klerk. Last year Mandela shared the Nobel Peace Prize with F. W. Klerk and Klerk was also the man who ordered Mandela’s release in 1990.

Now as he is the first “non-white” president in South Africa we’ll hopefully see more equality for all of the population. He’s got rid of apartheid. Maybe he’ll even be able to change the whites view and prejudice about black people?
