Yes, I think it is quite a fair punishment for those, who commit a serious crime, such as murder. But of course only on conditions of bulletproof evidence, to avoid innocent people to be punished for something they didn’t do.

Eye witness
DNA
The victim (if survived)
Evidens from the crime scene
But the person still can avoid a prison, if he/she has good layers, like it was fx. With the case O.J.Simpson vs People.

I have never faced it myself, but I know that a lot of prisoners in Russia are innocent. It’s a shame, because quite often the police officers find a person and build a case against him with all possible evidences, instead of try to find a real criminal.

I don’t think it should change something, the criminal should go to court anyway and get a punishment. I think in some countries that could be a way for the criminals to press the victim or victim’s families to be free from prison. It could be bribe, blackmailing, threats etc.
