Nelson Mandela was the leader of ANC (=African National Congress) and Mandela was against apartheid. The ANC is an social democratic political party in South Africa who fought for equal rights and freedom for black and white. The ANC were in 1962 planning an attack with weapons against the government.
Apartheid is a racial segregation between white and black people. The black people wasn’t allowed to walk at the same streets as the white, wasn’t allowed to sit on the same seats in the buss as the white, wasn’t allowed to go at the same toilets as the white etc.
Mandela was sent to a camp in Algeria but got arrested. He got a suspended sentence on lifetime, and got arranged at Robben Island.
Later Mandela received a message about his mother. She was dead because of a heart attack. He couldn’t get to her funeral.
His mom’s death, made him think about his life, the choice he choose. Was it the right thing to do, he also mentioned it in his book called “ Long Walk To Freedom”, that he wrote in 1994.
While Nelson Mandela was in prison, he only could have one visitor in a half year.
