My hero is Nelson Mandela. He was former president of South Africa, but before becoming president, he advocated for a human rights movement in South Africa, which was about the rights of the black people in South Africa. He died in 2013 at the age of 95, but he has done incredible things in his lifetime, he led a large movement, received over 250 honors including the Nobel Peace Prize, and served as president for 5 years. Nelson Mandela was born and raised in a tribal village. He was born by the name of Rolihlahla, which means troublemaker, but after deciding that everyone in Africa should have English names, he was named Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. Nelson's father was the tribal leader of their tribe, and Nelson was supposed to tread in his footsteps, but Nelson chose instead to go to university, and study law. And he was the first in his family to attend school. As a young law student, Mandela became involved in the political opposition to the white minority regime's denial of political, social and economic rights to the black majority. He joined the ANC, which stands for the African National Congress, and 20 years later, he became the leader of the ANC. In 1965, he and others from the ANC were sentenced to life imprisonment as the movement had become illegal, but came out again in 1990. After coming out, where sustained campaigns by the ANC and international pressure led to the release of the racist regime on February 11 following orders from President F.W. de Klerk, who at the same time lifted the ban on the ANC. After which Mandela together with De Klerk received the Nobel Peace Prize. In 1994, Mandela was voted President of South Africa for the first free election. I admire Nelson Mandela because he never gave up, he was keen to fight for justice, and although the odds were small and he was in prison for over 27 years because of the rebellion, he never gave up. He inspires me to do the right thing and always do it as best you can. If I think there is something hard, then I think of him, and thinking if he could do something so big, I can handle my own little problems too, and it gives me extra strength. Besides that, I think he is a really good person who has done something so incredible not least to Africa but to the whole world. He has always been an ideal to me and that is why Nelson Mandela is my hero.
