Cry Freedom is about a South African man, Steve Biko and the relationship he forms with a white newspaper editor Donald Woods. When we meet him, in the beginning of the movie, Steve Biko has already been "banned" by the South African government. "Banned" meant he was not allowed to be in the same room with more than one other person, not allowed to write. He was not allowed to leave his defined banning area. Biko invites Woods to visit a black township to see the conditions. Woods begins to agree with Biko's desire for a South Africa where blacks have the same opportunities and rights as the white population. Donald Woods starts to right a book about the terrible conditions. He succeeds smuggling the book to another country. So he can print it. And the rest of the world can hear about his experience.
