Nelson Mandela was a civil rights leader in South Africa. He fought against apartheid, a system where black citizens were segregated from whites and did not have equal rights.
Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918 in South Africa. His real name is Rolihlahla. He got his nickname Nelson from One of his schoolteachers. He attended school and later college and the University of Witwatersrand. At Witwatersrand Mandela got his law degree and meet some of his fellow associate against apartheid. Nelson Mandela became also a leader in the ANC. At first he pushed hard for the congress and the protesters to follow Mohandas Gandhi's non-violence approach. He planned to bomb certain buildings, but only the buildings. He wanted to maked the population sure that no one would be hurt. The South African government saw him as a terrorist and then sent him to prison. Mandela would spend the next 27 years in a prison.
In prison Nelson said that he would die for his ideals. He just wanted all people, of all races to have the same equal rights in South Africa. He was finally released through international pressure in 1990.
After he was released from prison, he continued his work on ending the apartheid. His hard work paid off when all races had the opportunity to vote in 1994. Nelson Mandela won the election and became the first Black president of South Africa.
