Many people know how horrible it feels like when you are considered as the black sheep in your family. It feels like your world is going to be torn apart and then you have had your share of sorrow. Even though you have found something to be passionate about then it is still not sufficient in your family´s eyes. This is exactly what the short story “Her Share of Sorrow” by Tessa Hadley from 2015 is about. The main character does not get accepted by her family.
In the story, we follow the ten-year-old girl Ruby. The story deals with two subjects; The importance of recognizing and the danger of perfectionism.
In the initial situation, the story takes place in Ruby´s home in the UK where we are introduced to the family circumstances. Her outer characterization is described as the complete opposite to her family members. She is described as a fat and pale girl whereas the family members are described as tall, thin and beautiful. Ruby´s inner characterization reveals that she is a detached girl who does not have any particular interests which makes it difficult for her to live up to their expectations. Besides that, Ruby comes across as a stubborn girl because she does not obey her mother.
