Nike's kontroversielle kampagne med Colin Kaepernick

I’ve been reading about Nike’s controversial campaign, and want to know why and what does Kaepernick so controversial, and have the consequences been worth it? Has this turned the picture into something positive, and why did Nike choose this campaign? Was it just to brand their name, even if their publicity is negative and boycotts?
