It is something you can achieve by working hard. It is an idea that suggests that anyone in the US can succeed. It is freedom, an opportunity. It is The American Dream. But when we dig into the term, then what is it really? Perhaps this catchy phrase is just a way of speaking from the old days. Maybe the crisis has made the dream into a nightmare, or maybe things are just as they used to be in The United States of America.

1)

Text 2 is a comment from U.S News & Word Report written by Arnold Schwarzenegger, governor of California. He is grateful for the opportunities America gives to the immigrants and he describes how America is a place to go if you want to make “your dreams come true” (p. 3 l. 6). Schwarzenegger had to work hard for his success, as he says “hard word and determination” (p. 3 l. 13) was what it took for him to make it from an immigrant, to an actor and finally as a governor. He argues that immigrants should give something back whenever they can, since they have been gifted with the many opportunities America have offered.

The third text is an article from the Internet forum: “Yahoo!” written by Anya Kamenetz. She argues that once you earn more than 50.000$ a year, your level of happiness does not rise with the money you earn. After her opinion, the idea of an American Dream was measured in money and materialistic things until the financial crisis came. And therefor she believes that the crisis has made the American citizens very gloomy and doubtable in the financial growth. Kamenetz concludes that it is time to prior “time” over “money” and that the new American Dream should be social security equal to an insurance of the Americans happiness.
