Social mobilitet i Storbritannien

Upward social mobility is people being able to move from one social class in society to another. This is for example from the working class to the middle class or from the middle class to upper class. Upward social mobility is often heavily influenced by economic factors, access to education and better jobs.

There are and there has always been a major difference between classes in the UK. Though through the last years there has been a debate about the social mobility getting more unavailable because of several economic and social factors.

The Social Mobility Commission (SMC) is a commission monitoring progression towards improving the social mobility in the UK, and it is sponsored by the department for education in the UK. The State of the Nation Report 2016 was a report on the studies done by the SMC. This report shows us that the UK is up against a social mobility crisis, which will influence both the working class as well as the lower middle class. In the article “Middle-income families, young and poor being 'left behind economically', government warned” these families are called Treadmill families. They are families in the working and lower middle class who work harder and harder but do not climb the social ladder. This problem is heavily influenced by geographical factors. This study shows that the gap is also affected by rural and urban areas in the UK. Big cities seem to be advancing and progressing on the socio-economic scale, while the rural areas doesn’t seem to be progressing very much. The head of the commission demands that Theresa May (PM) takes action to make change regarding this geographical issue.
