Social mobility refers to the ability of a person to move up or down the social ladder. This is crucial as low social mobility can lead to inequality and fewer opportunities, particularly in the job market. It can be especially frustrating for an individual not to have the same opportunities as others due to their social class. Unfortunately, the UK is among the countries with the lowest social mobility, making it challenging to climb the social ladder, especially if you are born into a poor family. This essay will analyse the obstacles to upward social mobility in Britain and discuss how to overcome these obstacles.

When you are born into a lower social class, there is a high probability that you will remain in that same social class throughout your life. If you belong to the working or lower class, you may talk and dress differently from those in the upper class. As a result, people may judge and look down on you based on the shoes you wear or your accent. Some may even refuse to hire you because they have certain expectations of how you should talk, dress, and behave. (Noor, 2016) (P.2 ll.42-44) This is a significant problem because such factors should not influence decisions when companies are hiring people. It can also be detrimental to the company itself, as they may end up overlooking the most qualified candidate for the job.
