Social mobility means that a person is able to move from his or her social class to another class in order to get a better life (The Editors of Encyclopaedia Britannica, 2019). It is hard to change the social pattern which the report from the British “Social Mobility Commission” published in 2016 really underlines. Only one out of eight people with low income backgrounds breaks the pattern and becomes high earners (Sky News). This report caused a lot of media attention and addressed certain problems in the British society. In the following two problems will be analyzed and discussed. Lastly, a conclusion of the findings will be presented.
The report showed that for the first time the current generation is worse off than the previous (Sky News). Among others the reasons behind should be found in an unfair education system, unaffordable housing and a two-tier labor market. The following will be focused on the two first issues.
The report and namely the unfair education system are the pattern breaker and writer Poppy Noor’s concern. In a letter to the editor in the Guardian Noor tells about her background where she studied journalism at the famous Cambridge University, but she still has to work as a waitress at night because she has to do an unpaid internship in order to have a career, but at the same time she needs to work to pay her rent and travelling costs (Noor, 2016). She finds it unfair that the internship is unpaid, and she often has to say no to opportunities because of the lack of payment. She also mentions that she needs to sublet her room and instead live at her boyfriend’s place because she does not have the money. This is also a critique of the high housing prices.
