Invictus tells the inspiring story of how Nelson Mandela joined forces with the captain of South Africa’s rugby team to help unite their country. The newly elected President Mandela knows his nation remains racially divided in the wake of apartheid. Mandela believes that he can bring his people together through the spirit of sport, Mandela rallies South Africa’s rugby team as they make their historic win in the 1995 Rugby World Cup finale. The movie is inspired by the poem “Invictus” by William Ernest Henley. Mandela was inspired by this poem when sat prisoned on Robben Island.

In my opinion the director, Clint Eastwood, did a really good job making Invictus. He did a really good job on making a connection between the poem Invictus, that the movie is named after and inspired by, and the true story about the Rugby World Cup 1995.

I enjoyed watching Invictus, because when you watch Invictus you learn about Mandela’s story, character and personality all at once. I liked that the movie wasn’t only about Nelson Mandela, but also about how people reacted to Mandela being elected and of course the South African rugby team. I also find the movie inspiring. The movie carries a lot of facts about apartheid and Mandela’s fight to acceptance, so in that perspective the movie can be good as teaching material.
