Their relationship gets better as they all start to accept their differences, and when the unite under the sport rugby. They start out as pure enemies, since they hate/don't trust each other, but Mandela insists that they should cooperate - as they begin to understand they've got the same purpose, they slowly begin to like each other.

When Mandela was elected, the white people feared, the Mandela was going to revenge the black for all the years of slavery, and remove all of the white values and jobs. But he decides to forgive the white, and keep the rugby team, and by that he proves that he's a better man.

So they could see what Mandela had been through, and see what he had to forgive. Mandela is a very peaceful person, and he values the ability to forgive highly - and he proved that by forgiving the white men, even when they jailed him, in a cell he was barely able to move in, for 27 years.
