The title “Invictus” means undefeated or ”uovervindelig/ ubesejret” in Danish. It means if you fight hard enough then you will win at last. You are captain of your own soul. It’s the title of a poem written by William Ernest Henley.

When Nelson Mandela, the first black president in South Africa, was in prison, he survived by using this poem. He was in prison for twenty-three years at Robben Island. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 before he became president.

The story takes place in South Africa in the year 1995 and is about the fight against apartheid and the relationship between black and white people.

The most important characters in this movie are Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) and Francois Pienaar (Matt Damon). Francois comes from a rich white family and he is the national team coach in rugby for South Africa.

Mandela seeks out Francois to help the rugby team to win. He gives him the poem “invictus” and there is a connection between them and they become friends. Nelson Mandela is known all over the world as a decent and clever man and many royal and famous people have invited him to their country. They listen to him and show him respect for what he has done in South Africa. In this movie we follow the person Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman). I think his act is very close to what Mandela has done for the people in the nineties. Normally I get tired to watch fights between black and white people in American movies.
