The immigration system is ‘broken and unfair’ in the US and is currently by interest alongside the 44th President of America, Barack Obama. On November 20th, 2014 the President delivered a speech about his new immigration law to the nation, “Address to the Nation on immigration”. Although Republican leaders in the Congress have been refusing it. With a new law in sight he tries to inform and convince that they all as a nation, have to work together and fix the immigration system to be fairly and more just. He attempts to connect with his audience through three dimensions: Ethos, pathos, and logos. Through these three forms of rhetorical appeals, President Obama widens the spectrum of his liberal and conservative audience.

President Barack Obama made a political live speech to the American nation on national tv, directly from the White House. In the speech, he is very personal and includes the citizens with words as ‘our and we’. E.g. when he says, “But today, our immigration system is broken – and everybody knows it. (p,1l,5,)”. This statement expresses his view on the immigration system, he doesn’t point fingers on anyone but as a nation, they have to acknowledge the problem. That is common for a political speech where they tend to be expressive and also convey their felling’s to the readers and listeners, in this case, it is about his feelings regarding the immigration system in the US. The sender of the speech is therefore, Barack Obama, President of the United States. With him having that authority it makes him a credible speaker even though there is a political orientation that doesn’t agree with him or finds it credible. He addresses to the whole nation about his new law that needs support from the Congress, especially the Republicans. It is a current topic too President Obama because many immigrants on a daily basis try to illegally pass the American borders. Since he is black it gives him some ethos and extra credibility and because he especially wants the immigrants and the Republicans to listen.
