Rory Stewart are starting his speech, “Why democracy matters”, with a joke about the shame of admitting that you are a politician. “So little Billy goes to school, and he sits down and the teacher says, “What does your father do? And little Billy says, “My father the plays the piano in an opium den. “So the teacher rings up the parents, and says, “Very shocking story from little Billy today. Just heard that he claimed that you play the piano in an opium den.” And the father says, “I’m very sorry. Yes, it’s true, I lied. But how can I tell an eight-year-old boy that his father is a politician? (L1-5). Starting with a joke is a very good thing to do, you get the audience attention and that also why Roy starts with this joke.

Stewart means that democracy is holding the system together and that’s also why he refers to the middle east, because they can’t get democracy to work. Stewart also means that the reason to the bad democracy in the middle east is corruption.
