You have all heard this story before. The story about a healthy, happy and beautiful girl who suddenly stops smiling and puts on twenty pounds. The girl everyone talks about behind her back. “Have you seen her? She is like twice the size compared to the last time I saw her”. “What happened to her?” It is wired thinking that how you fell and how much you eat often are combined. The author Sarah Paretsky has written a short story about a girl called Daphne Raydor. The main character Daphne is the perfect example of a beautiful girl witch weight is mainly controlled by her feelings.

The title of the short story “A taste of life” binds the whole story together. Daphne Raydor is a girl who grew up with a mother that fed her up as much as she could whenever she got the chance. She did not want her daughter to be prettier than her. Daphne longed for love, and tried to satisfy her dreams with romantic novels. And while she read, she ate, a lot. She literally drowned her feelings in chocolate chip cookies. But it makes scenes if you think about it. Candy and all other types of sweets contains sugar and sugar contains endorphins. When you eat sugar your body releases endorphins such as dopamine that reaches a “happy center” in your brain, which is why you at first will feel happier, and perhaps even calmer. This is why Daphne Raydor cannot stop overeating, her whole life is eating. The problem with endorphins is that this “happy feeling” it gives you, do not last forever. Luckily Daphne found something else to make her happy.
