Analytical Essay on Carol Rzadkiewicz’s short story ‘’A Taste of Heaven’’

Most people have insecurities and has to deal with these emotions in their everyday routine. In most cases it can be comfortable and can give you a feeling of structure and makes it easier for you to cope with life, having a certain routine. However, there is a fine line between a well-planned and secure everyday life and a life of boredom and predictability that ends up distancing you from life. This is somewhat what the story “A Taste of Heaven” by Carol Rzadkiewicz from 2009 is about. It is about how the narrator’s day-to- day routine is so predictable that her life has become a condition of numbness, guilt, and accusations. The text deals with the theme in a realistic manner, as the readers can somewhat relate to the narrator’s conditions, and problems that she face. We all deal with our own personal problems and insecurities, that we have different ways of coping with. Our main character Bette carries a lot of guilt around on the daily. Her way of dealing with these emotions is by indulging in sweets. She feels misunderstood and judged by her husband, due to her own insecurities about her body and weight. She also has a way of victimizing herself and comes up with excuses as to why it is okay for her to eat something, she ‘’really shouldn’t’’. But is her husband being controlling or supportive when telling her what she should and shouldn’t eat?
