Every cloud has a silver lining. Except nuclear mushroom clouds, which have a lining of Strontium-90, Caesium 137, and other radioactive isotopes. These components are what makes the atomic bombs so unbelievably cruel. Upon detonation atoms are literally gutted. This is also, why we named the atomic bomb, like we did. It is a bomb, that “simply” destroys every atom in its radius.
When “Little Boy” was detonated over Hiroshima, only 1.38% of its uranium actually fissioned. The rest was blown away before that could happen. This means, the fission of nearly 0.7 grams of uranium, that’s less than the weight of a banknote, was enough to kill 80,000 people and destroy two thirds of the city’s buildings.
Now I want you to imagine it, as if just another 0.7 grams of uranium fissioned on top of the 0.7 grams, that already fissioned. That is already twice as big of an explosion, and in theory 80.00 more people. Now imagine the full 100% landing on top of Hiroshima. We wouldn’t have Japan lying at the coast of East-Asia.
It must’ve been terrifying, I mean, not so much for the people that died, since they wouldn’t have felt much pain, but for the people, that had to watch the city burn, people’s skin being eaten alive by the pure radioactivity in the fallout area of the detonation.
