'The Riot Club' filmanalyse

The Riot Club is a movie about a prestigious club at Oxford University in the United Kingdom. The club’s members are the richest and smartest students. In the movie, we follow Alistair and Miles who have both just joined the club. The movie does not stretch very far in time. It only takes place over a few weeks. Starting at the first day of school and ending with Alistair being let free. The environment revolves around partying, spending money and destroying things. Every time we see the members of The Riot Club together, either one of those things happen.

Miles and Alistair are complete opposites. Miles and Alistair first meet each other on the first day of school. Miles and Alistair switched rooms because Miles’s room used to be Alistair’s big brothers’ room. This shows that Miles is a kind person because he wanted to help him even though he would get a worse room. Miles also begins a relationship with Lauren, who has a lower-class background. This shows that Miles does not care what kind of background she has, and he does not think he is better than her just because of that. Miles comes from a rich family, but he is different from the other members of The Riot Club. When they are at the dinner Miles realizes that he does not want to be part of The Riot Club. He does not like what they are doing and how they are treating people. Miles is also the one who calls the ambulance when the pub-owner is knocked unconscious, even though the others tell him not to do it. At the start of the movie Alistair is a quiet boy and does not express himself. Alistair comes from a rich family, but he did not go to Eton like his big brother, Alistair went to Harrow. You get the feeling that Alistair’s parents like his older brother more than him. That could be the reason why they did not go to the same school. Alistair feels like he has to be better than his brother. Alistair does not like poor people, and he thinks that he is better than them, because he has a lot of money and a higher status. He also thinks that he can buy himself out of any situation. We can see that in the scene where Alistair talks about his political ideals in the pub. When the pub-owner sees what The Riot Club has done to his pub, he tells them to leave. Alistair tries to bribe him, but he does not want the money and mocks Alistair. Alistair then proceeds to beat him up.
