Analysis and comments of “Why Chinese Mothers Are Superior”
In 2011, an article about Chinese mothers’ way of raising children was issued in the American daily newspaper The Wall Street Journal. Amy Chua, an American/Chinese woman, who is a professor at Yale University wrote the article, which is about the – for some – rather harsh way that she, and other Chinese mothers are rumoured to raise their children, for them to achieve great success academically.
Earlier in the year, Amy Chua published a book called "Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother" in which she presents the idea that the Chinese way of raising children, even though it is a lot different than the one, which is practised in this part of the world, works just fine. Her methods have not been well received, and they have created plenty of debate.
As mentioned, the article is published in the American newspaper The Wall Street Journal, which is only released in countries in the western part of the world. Therefore, you can say that there already in the title is a great contrast. “Why Chinese mothers are superior” is a title that is meant to provoke. Amy Chua spends a great load of time describing how western parents have a too soft approach to raising children. An approach that is lagging behind the way it is done in the East, which can be seen in the difference between the academic achievements by children of Asian, and western parents.
